I REALLY need someones advice! My husband and I are looking for a car to buy. He found one he really likes, which is a Honda Civic 2001. They are asking for 4000$. The car is well kept, but has 160,000 miles on it. I'm very eh on buying it. To me it has too much miles, but my husband is set on buying it. I just don't have a good feeling about it. What do you think? Do you think it's worth it? Or should we look for a diff car with less mileage.

$4000 looks about right for the specifications of the vehicle if it is in good condition. Is there someone you know that you could take it to get checked out/make sure that there are no problems with it before you purchase? I would recommend that you get it looked at before you purchase it.
Consider looking into private owners outside of Jacksonville. You may stumble upon a younger vehicle with less mileage for the same price.

I think Marines tend to have higher mileage vehicles (assuming, of course, a Marine is selling it lol) since most have to travel 'home'.

I would definitely suggest having a mechanic look at the vehicle before you buy it.

You have looked up the KBB value, right? Or Nada Guides. You can also get the car fax on it, but I believe you have to pay for that.

If you have a bad feeling, though, I'd definitely think about passing on this one and looking some more.

I agree with having a mechanic check it out and looking up values on NADA otherwise, go for it.

Just make sure to keep the timing belt changed every 90,000 miles and go for it. If it has not been changed recently, ask them to come down some on the price.

@dmc21 I did look on KBB, it says it's valued around 2300$ considering the mileage. They just contacted me saying that it has a little more miles since they drove it back to their hometown. (It's a marine wife's car)

@Boobsy McNicehiney It's still up in the air to have a mechanic check it out. But they are more than willing to if we want.

@Newbernbears What is the timing belt? Would it make a big difference if they did? Lol sorry I really don't know much about cars.

dmc21 (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

wait, so they are asking $4000 for a car that is valued at $2300? Did they explain why they want almost twice the value?

I know some cars are like that, if they are harder to find. I think it's ridiculous and would keep looking. I'm not hung up on a certain car (make/model), though, just a good value.

OK, so I just got a little 'education' from my son. lmao

He said that as long as it hasn't been raced, modified, is in good condition engine wise (no oil leaks, etc) and has a good body, then it is probably worth that much.

Parts are pretty cheap and plentiful. Great gas mileage. He's looking at a buddy's 1992 Civic and is looking at about $1500 for it.

He said he'd probably offer $33/3500 if all the above was good. lol
He also said that if it's in great shape, not raced (all mentioned above), it probably won't last long, even at that price.

:)

The timing belt keeps the valves in sync with the pistons. If it breaks on a Honda, sometimes minor or major engine damage occurs, because valves collide with pistons. It's not a big deal, just have it replaced about every 90000 miles and you will be fine. They are great cars, I drove one 22 years, until a little old lady t-boned it!listen to dmc on the price, they will go lower, if not, there are tons for sale. Personally, I like my old Corolla a little better, and no engine damage occurs when the timing belt decides to break. My daughter drives a 2000 Civic. The Accord would be more comfortable for you.

Average "allowable" mileage is 15K a year - the vehicle is 13 years old, so the mileage isn't considered high.

I wouldn't spend 4K on a 13 yr old car, but that's just me.

I totally agree with that. I wouldn't either.

I wouldn't do it either … honestly, put the $4,000 down on a newer car from a dealer and make low payments ...
