Hey all!

We are PCSing from Fort Worth, TX to Lejeune in about 3 weeks. We are a family of (almost) 5, as I am due in June with our third child.

We were told by housing today that Heroes Manor (what we applied for) would be a 1-2 month wait. They said we could get an older Watkins Village 4bd or TT 4bd the day we arrive.

My husband wants to just take the older Watkins house but I've heard horrible things. Any insight? If I were to convince him to wait it out for Heroes, any advice on extended stay options for families with pets?

the older Watkins Village SNCO housing? If so, they are pretty old, and look run down from the outside. I haven't been in one in many years, though.

If it's older NCO housing, it's really not that old. It's very nice, at least the few I have been into.

The biggest difference is that Watkins is ran by AMCC and Heroes is ran by Lincoln. If you have a preference there, then that might be the deciding factor.

We haven't lived in any base housing since the 90s, so I don't really have any advice on it because it wasn't even privatized yet. Looking at pictures, though, Heroes looks pretty nice.

As for extended stay. There's an Extended Stay hotel in Jacksonville, I'm sure you can google it. That's all the info I have, though. lol

Have you tried Onslow Beach? Since it's off peak, they may rent for longer than a week at a time.
There's also the Lejeune Inn. You can find information for the beach on the MCCS website, as well as the Lejeune Inn.

Good luck, and welcome!

Old Watkins and part of the new Watkins is E1-E5, as is all of Heros Manor. That you can immediately move into an Old Watkins unit should be an indicator as to what you will get. I'd hold out for Heros Manor or look out in town. Right now Jacksonville is a renters market, so finding something decent outside of the gate shouldn't be hard.

Thank you both!

My husband got a call yesterday that a new Watkins Village home just came available and they are saving it for us.

We may end up moving off base eventually, but I am 5 months pregnant so the location (and no gate traffic) is priority right now.

CSphoto,
In my opinion, the vinyl flooring in the "new" Watkins that I saw is very low grade and easily damaged. Be careful moving furniture or appliances - if the bottom-of-line vinyl gets torn or ripped you may be charged for “damages.” Same thing goes for TT2 and Knox Cove…and probably the newer construction in Midway Park.

As an aside, I am very confident saying that those units in old Watkins were at one time supposed to be demolished. However, the Actus/AMCC wizards decided to bring them back on-line, and that is what Catlin said was offered to her family. Just me, but old Watkins housing looks like a slum that needs to go to an Hazmat landfill.

AMCC has had about 8 or so years since privitazation to "make it right." When is it going to happen?

I must say I am suprised to see you comment on a housing post ATK1.

AMCC manages the properties, they're not in charge of the renovations, only the maintenance.

The Fed decides what gets replaced and what gets rehabilitated.

lol Boobsy …. hilarious

Shizzle - check the facts before you blab about something you don't know anything about. As a result of privitization, AMCC (Actus - their parent company) is responsible for the renovations and new construction.

When are you going to tell us why you hump Amcc so much?
