For those that it applies to, how did you teach your child the ABC's? I am looking for a different way to teach my youngest. She knows the song but that's not the same as "knowing" her alphabet. I've tried flash cards, puzzles, blocks, computer games, and board books. Those ways don't really seem to interest her. TIA

Sesame Street is your new BFF

We used the ABC magnets for the fridge, paper & pencil, the foam letters, and reading stories.

had the magnets - she wasn't interested int hem

We read stories - she LOVES stories but those don't seem to help

You could also use a magnadoodle (sp?) board, you write out a few of them and have her copy it. Then erase and do more of them.

We use Leapfrog Fridge Phonics, alphebet puzzles, and paper and crayons.

As a former preschool teacher, I love that you have an alphabet rich environment! I think that she is going to pick it up and surprise you with her knowledge. And keep reading to her! You sound like an awesome parent, keep it up!

We just had the basics (magnets, flashcards, books etc)and they picked it up when they were ready to.

My youngest refused to do stuff like write her name, tie her shoes, she told US she would do it when she started kindergarten. Sure enough, first week of school she was writing her name and tying her shoes. Heh, she's a stubborn kid.

For learning colors, I painted blocks on the walls and she loves to play "find the color". I call one out and she goes and points to it. She's got all the primary colors down at 18 months.

For alphabet, I plan to get foam or wooden letters, paint them fun designs and put velcro on the backs. Then I'm going to have a long felt board on the wall so we can go over each letter and put them in the correct order. When she gets the hang of that we can use the letters to make little words on the board too!

Preschool did WONDERS for JoJo on ABCs! lol! My friends swears by the Leap Frog ABC videos.

I think what you're doing and all of the suggestions are great. It's all a matter of keeping it fun, keeping it consistant, and NOT pushing it if she's not having fun! This is the only time in her entire life that is just for fun, she has forever to learn ABCs :)

dbal, try starfall.com
also, get cheap shaving cream and let her spread it out on a table or plastic placemat. Drill her on the letters. Kids love that. That's what I did when I was teaching phonics. YOu want to be sure she knows the letters out of order/randomly, but I'm sure you know that. =)

My daughter is about to turn 5 on Tue and she struggles alittle bit with her alphabet..Like you i have tried the flashcards, magnets, charts..however my new thing im trying is..My daughter LOVES LOVES LOVES to write so i got her a notebook and she can draw a picture each day in it..Then i have her write her first and last name on the page, Then she gets to write 4 random words, she tells me what words she wants to write(1 at a time)..I tell her the letter and she either knows it and writes it or she has to look at her chart and say the alphabet until she gets to the letter she needs to write next.. We have been doing this daily since school got out a cpl wks ago(she went to pre-k) and she is really doing well..She doesnt pick tiny words..I will suggest small words like cat and she will say no and suggest somthing like computer..lol

I dont know if this would work for you, not sure how old you child is

I did a letter a week at home. We would cut out the letter and she would paint it and hang it on the wall. Then each day we would make a craft that was related to the letter of the week. We would also read a book (her choice) and point to all the letters we could find in the book for that week.

It was fun! Especially the week of "C" since we made cupcakes!

She is 4 now but she can sing her alphabet, identify all her letters, knows upper and lowercase and can write them. She won't start Kinder until 2011 though...bummer!

Can goods lined up on the bench with the first letter to each taped on below the can. Then I would take the cans off and have the match the food to the letter.
