We will land in Jacksonville on the 15th and I need to find a Special Education Preschool for my son. Yes, we are a part of EFMP, and I will get the lists and recommendations from them as well. I was just looking for other parent's experience with special education preschools in the area.

My son has Childhood Apraxia of Speech, if that makes a difference. Thanks. :-)

It all depends on where you live. EFMP will not give you a list of schools. We have NEVER received anything like that from them.
Irregardless of the situation. You will still need to go through the process with services on or off base. Hopefully you brought your past records by hand. This will surely help. Beware that your child will need to be re-tested for services. If you have any questions feel free to send me a msg. Good luck to you

My daughter has high functioning (she's verbal) autism and hearing loss and we went through Tarawa Terrace Elementary for early intervention/special education preschool services. I had a horrible experience with them. From the IEP process to her first few days of school I was angry and frustrated. My favorite part was the principle telling me "I can't see anything wrong with her. She makes great eye contact." after spending about 10 minutes with my kid.
We pulled her out and I went off base to Onslow County Partnership for Childrenwhere we registered her for preschool based on her special education need. We put her in Miss Ms Tot University where my daughter bloomed more than I ever could have imagined. On the tour I learned that they already had several children that have autism and other disabilities. They allow tutors, speech therapists, and ABA therepists or whoever else to come during school time to work with the child unless it is not constructive for the child. For example, my daughter's ABA tutors were going for a wile but everyone felt she was doing better with independent tutoring at home and flourished in the school environment letting the other students set example for what she was supposed to do so we stopped therapy at school and continues it at home.

MMTU is a private preschool that receives funding from whoever funds the public preschools so you are able to go to them as a preschool just as you would and elementary.

I don't know anything about Childhood Apraxia of Speech so I don't know if that is the environment you are looking for but definitely the Onslow Partnership for Children can help you find a preschool. :) If you don't have an IEP for your son that would be the first step. You go to the elementary he would be assigned to and write a letter requesting for evaluation. They will have their speech people and special education team evaluate him and give what they recommend for him. For my daughter they only wanted to let her go to school twice a week for 3 hours. Everyone else that had been working with her thought she needed more structure. We were proven right by taking her out of the program at TT and putting her full time at Miss Ms. That place is amazing.

Anyhow, hopefully this helps... Good luck! Oh and if you dont have the IEP, go talk with EFMP about what to expect. Brush up on the laws and parent rights. Do not let them push you into something you dont feel is right for your son. I didn't realize that I had a say and it turned out badly for us. We are now in Pendleton and the IEP teams out here are nothing short of angels. They still have their thorns but it's been a much better experience particularly because I am more educated about the process.

Wendy Boyd can probably be a great resource for you as well. A really great lady that has lots of experience with this.

My daughter had an IEP before school age as well and although it's been a long time since, the county had people come to her day care to work with her weekly.

Hey Donna, my son also has Apraxia of speech. I sent you a message.

My son also has Apraxia of Speech. Please PM me if you come across any preschool recommendations. We will be coming to Lejeune in August. Thank you!!

We have an IEP already set up, and he has been with EDIS for about a year and a half. With the limited resources on Okinawa he has only had a speech therapist twice a month (not nearly enough for this issue). Thankfully, there is a great developmental pediatrician out here and he got the ball rolling for us in Lejeune. Thank you all for your input, it is helpful to hear other's experiences.

@Huntersmama- I will let you know what I find out. :-)

My 2 year old son was just diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech today. Anyone tips or pointers you guys could provide would be awesome. We already have him set up with CDSA and are waiting on a referral for Speech 4 Kidz.

The edis doctor here is also a wonderful developmental pediatrician. Are you planning to live on base or in town? Personally, my son received better services on base but I know that is not always the case. He has a mixed receptive/expressive language disorder. If you are going o be living on base you will need to go through edis and dodea. If you will be living out intown you will need to go through the school district (if your son is 3).

That's great that you have had him evaluated and are getting him started with therapy! I've seen so many parents in denial, which only harms the kids in the long run. My son has been in speech therapy since he was 18 months old. We started with the CDSA but then moved on base and continued with EDIS. They both were very helpful. The majority of his time was spent with EDIS and they helped him transition to pre-school at 3. He was getting speech at school and at JZ MANN. I have heard that Speech 4 Kids is a great place though. I wasn't impressed with the on-base developmental ped. Some people like him, others don't. Much like anywhere else I suppose.

I will say his bedside manner is different, lol. My daughter called him eeyore. But he was patient, intelligent, and listened to my concerns
