My husband got orders for 3 years accompanied orders to Okinawa. At first I was going to go with him however, after doing a lot of talking we have decided that I will be staying in the states because he is deploying while he over there and he would rather me here. Plus I go to college full time and work. I just don't know if we are making the right choice. He is a cpl.

So our questions are.

Would the bah be based on were I am or where he is?

would be still get COLA?

In what other ways would this affect his pay?

BAH is based on where the service member is stationed

He would more than likely still be gone for 24 months

He more than likely would not get FSA.

He could also lose BAS (food money). This one I am not sure of, but thinking it *could* happen. The last time my husband was in Oki, he lost it, but it was some years ago.

I don't know anything about COLA, because I don't remember if my husband got it when he was last there. If he did, it was so small that I didn't notice.

*ETA we weren't married the last time he went, so single guys might not even rate COLA for all I know lol

He needs to ask his monitor. Sometimes they take certain things away like seps pay as well if he was ordered accompanied but takes unaccompanied. His monitor can answer every one of your questions.

yup. that's what a friend's husband was told (now ex ha ha ha). And my husband's monitor told him the same thing last time he was up for orders and that was batted around. Said he'd be gone 24 months and would not get FSA if it was voluntary.

*ETA he should probably start with his Career Planner, though. :)

In this case, BAH is based off of either the location of the dependent or the previous duty station. Make sure he works with the IPAC PCS Orders section to have the PCS orders identify the location of the dependents if it isn't the previous duty station.

The Marine will receive COLA Barracks.

Probably. If the PCS orders are voluntarily changed to unaccompanied, he should not be authorized Family Separation Allowance (FSA).

Tell him to call his monitor, rules have changed so much, with his list of questions. Used to be is if you changed accomp orders to unacccomp orders it was 24 months. Monitor has the last word.
