Hubs is wanting to lat move to this MOS (6174). Anyone have a hubby who does/did this? Any experiences? Thanks! :-]

6174 is a crew chief on the Huey and Cobra, or "skids." My husband is a crew chief on the CH-53E. There are a couple of similarities. He will be responsible for the daily inspections of the aircraft. He will be out front when the pilots turn-up the helicopter. He can't fly in a cobra (it's only for two pilots) but he can fly in a Huey. If he does, he'll make sure passengers are safe throughout the flight. He'll also be another set of eyes, able to see further back than the pilots can. If there are guns on board, he will man them. He will be part of the Flight Line division of the squadron, meaning he will be a mechanic for engines, flight controls, rotor systems, and fuel systems. In order to qualify, he has to be at least a 2nd class swimmer by Marine Corps standards and then pass Navy swimming school in Pensacola. One of the things he'll have to do is escape a sinking helicopter. He also may be sent to SERE school. I'm sure he's already heard about this. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the multiple posts - Charter is being stupid.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

53Wife -- Thanks for the info! What you've said is pretty much what we read via google. :-] So that's good to know! Does your hubby like his job? I know that's a day to day thing (haha), but. He's a tank mech right now -- so the mechanicry (is that a word? :-P) won't be an issue for him to learn. :-]

53Wife --- 15 years ago -

No problem! Yeah, he likes his job. He's been doing it for about 6 years and now he's an instructor at the school for new crew chiefs! Like any other job in the Marine Corps, some days are better than others, but overall, he likes it and the work schedule isn't too bad. :)

He's really excited about this, so I hope it works out for him/us. He's not eligible for re-enlistment until June -- so that'll give him time to get his swim qual (which he should do fine w/ -- he's just never had a reason to do it before). We were a little bummed @ the options of bases -- New River, Cherry Point, Camp Pendleton.

53Wife --- 15 years ago -

He's been at New River for his a few years and we'll be here for another 4 at least. It's not too bad, we just go on vacation at least once a month so we don't feel like we're so isolated here in this small town. We don't really want Pendleton either, since both of our families are on the East Coast.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

We live in Newport now. & wouldn't mind staying here, I suppose. My family is here, so that's nice! We both feel Pendleton would be a little isolating. But I think it might be nice -- a little different, away from everyone, we can make our own lives, yadda yadda. & then move back here so we can start having babies! Hahah! ;-) I just need to make sure the USMC is aware of my plans. *BIGGGG laugh* How long is the training? Total? I was trying to google, but no luck. Doesn't have to be exact, just a round-about would be nice.

ces1 --- 15 years ago -

I just need to make sure the USMC is aware of my plans. Sure hope you met this as a joke, cause the USMC could care less about YOUR plans as you probably already know.

53Wife --- 15 years ago -

How long is the training? Total? My hubby said he'll be at Pensacola for about a month, SERE school for 2 weeks, mechanics school for appx. 2 months, and then air crew school for about 3-4 months. These are just based on the crew cheif training my hubby went through for the 53.

Wow, thanks for asking! :-] That doesn't sound too bad -- he'll be in Pensacola for a month, Maine for 2 weeks & the rest is in New River (if I remember correctly). That's better than we thought! :-]

53Wife --- 15 years ago -

Yeah, it's not too bad. :) My husband is almost done with his Bachelor's degree, so he is putting in a package to become a pilot. We're looking at Quantico for almost a year, Texas for 6 months, Florida for 6 months, then New River for about a year. LOL

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

We're looking at Quantico for almost a year, Texas for 6 months, Florida for 6 months, then New River for about a year. LOL Oh goodness! Good luck to your hubby & you! Will you be able to go w/ him during that time? I've got a year & a half left of school. So the moving around won't really affect me. He just won't be here for me to see on the weekends. :-P

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

Oh! Another question. Deployment? Has your hubby deployed?

Wisconsin Sarah (Mod) --- 15 years ago -

DVM my hubby works on Ospreys! :o)

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

DVM my hubby works on Ospreys! :o) Oh yea? We looked @ those, too! :-] But he likes the Huey because of the mini-gun -- He said, "I'd get to shoot the mini-gun... that'd be bad@$$!!!!" He literally like a little kid about this MOS. Which is VERY exciting to me, too! :-] I just PRAY PRAY PRAY that it works out!!!

53Wife --- 15 years ago -

Deployment? Has your hubby deployed? He's deployed a few times, but all were under 7 months.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

He's deployed a few times, but all were under 7 months. That's not bad @ all. He loved his first deployment. & he's itching to go again. & under 7 months is fine with me! ;-)

Charlie --- 15 years ago -

DNM, My husband is 6174 (Huey Crew Cheif)Most of what 53wife said is correct. But the one thing that she got wrong was huey crew cheifs do fly in the Cobra's when they are doing testing on them(but the do have to be a qualified tester). My husband who was also a lat mover was in school and on the job traing for about a year. I believe that most of the traing for Huey Crew Cheifs takes place in California with the exception of the Navy Swim course which is in Pensacola Fl. Also they work horrible hours in my opinion a normally day start at 5 and ends around 5 or 6. Although it might just be his squadron. If you have any other question just ask:)

Charlie --- 15 years ago -

sorry double posted:)

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 15 years ago -

Charlie -- Thanks for the info! Yea, 12 hour days are not very good, in my opinion. But he's working those now. & may not be so bad if he enjoys his job. How's your hubby enjoy his job? What was his previous MOS (if you don't mind me asking)?

Charlie --- 15 years ago -

I suppose if they enjoy their job it does help the long work day go by faster. He likes it but he miss his old MOS which was Utlities(1171) I believe.
